The Betsy Hotel

You enter the lobby at The Betsy Hotel and you get a feeling that there is something different about this beautiful hotel, while you sit drinking a cocktail or maybe a nice cup of coffee close to the bar, your eye catches an old Underwood mechanical typerwitter next to several books. Indeed this is not your average trendy hotel at South Beach. This is a place where art meets literature focused to the vibrant and multicultural Miami’s community. About The Betsy, The Writer’s Room and the Festival ESCRIBE AQUÍ, Nagari had a converstion with Pablo Cartaya, Literary Program’s Manager for the Writer’s Room at The Betsy.

How does the Betsy transition from a Hotel at South Beach to a cultural destination in Miami? Or was it part of its core formation?

The hotel ownership, led by Jonathan Plutzik, his wife Lesley and Jonathan’s sister Deborah created a model called Philanthropy, Arts, Culture and Education which drives the four star/four diamond hotel’s mission. The idea that art brings community together is something near and dear to not only the ownership but to all staff members in the hotel. We wanted to be a hotel that did things differently, focusing on inner beauty within the landscape of South Beach’s very visible outer beauty, and bringing art and culture together with a focus on community. This is what sets the hotel apart in my opinion. I should also add that part of the hotel’s core formation is that Jonathan and Deborah’s late father, the poet Hyam Plutzik’s work, a three time finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in Poetry, drives the hotel’s literary sensibility. In fact, his desk sits in our writer’s room – which is a room dedicated solely for artist residencies (visit betsywritersroom.com).

Pablo Cartaya Literary Program’s Manager for the Writer’s Room at The Betsy

When did you join the Writer’s Room team and what made you become a part of it? I’ve been fortunate to know Deborah and Jonathan for the better part of five years when we connected on a writer’s in exile project I was working on at the time through Miami Dade College. Then two years ago, The Writer’s Room at The Betsy was awarded an Arts Challenge Grant through the Knight Foundation and I was lucky to have been given the honor of being the first literary programs consultant for the project. This started part time and eventually became a full time position and finally an official position at the hotel was created this past January. It’s still mind boggling that a luxury hotel has a manager of literary programs and community partnerships. I’m very honored to be a part of this. I think it’s important to share this evolution with you because it’s so integral to what The Betsy is all about. Partnerships that build over time and become long lasting and meaningful in so many ways.

For how long has the Writer’s Room existed and how has it grown over the years? The Writer’s Room officially kicked off during National Poetry Month in 2012 with former US Poet Laureate, Billy Collins inaugurating the room. Since then we have had over two hundred and fifty authors, artists, and thought-leaders stay in The Writer’s Room. The list ranges from luminaries such as Amy Tan to Michael Ondaatje to emerging voices in young adult literature and of course, The Betsy sweet spot, an incredible roster of poets in various stages of their career. Since that first residency, we have expanded our programs to cover a wide ranging cultural and social landscape that includes the LGBT community of artists and writers, the African American community of writers, the children and young adult writers community and of course, the Iberoamerican community of authors. The Writer’s Room has become a place for all forms and genres of artistic expression. We want to honor the artists and organizations that are doing pace-setting work in their fields. The growth of the program is to continue to ensure all fields of literature and art have a place to convene and let their voices be heard.

The list of authors that have stayed at the Writer’s Room is impressive. Can you tell us an anecdote about the experience of one of these author’s at the Writer’s room? Wow, that’s a tough one! There are so many wonderful gems that have come out of the experiences from the Writer’s Room. In fact, our office overflows with incredible notes from authors and artists who have visited. Screenwriter, Maya Perez said, “A clean quiet room with nothing to worry about, just the writing at hand,” is a particularly nice sentiment. Also, our partner in the coming Escribe Aqui festival, Pedro Medina, gave me one of my favorite quotes. He said, “El tiempo más valioso del mundo, es el tiempo para escribir. Gracias Betsy.” But I have to say, and only because his spirit seems to inspire much of the writing that goes on in The Writer’s Room, Hyam Plutzik once said, “Out of my life, I fashioned a fistful of words, when I opened my hands, they flew away.” So many incredible writers have come through that room and I believe the words they create have flown to countless places.

You can sense a holistic approach of the Betsy’s atmosphere in terms of fulfilling the senses through the arts. Please, tell us about the cultural activities that are carried throughout the year and how do you plan them. There are typically three tiers of programs that are created here. One is when a partner or organization comes with an idea to host an event and we become the convening space to carry out the event. We host a number of receptions, readings, and residencies that come through our various partners including O,Miami, Unity Coalition/Coalicion Unida and about two hundred other organizations. The second tier is us actively programming cultural programs of particular importance including LGBT, Jewish Literature Studies, Writers for Young Readers, an A Cappella Festival, and of course, our Iberoamerican authors initiative. The third is when an inquiring author comes via word of mouth and we organically create a program around their visit with one of our various partners. All in all, it’s a very organic way to create meaningful community based programs.

Being Miami a multicultural and multilingual community The Betsy is carrying an initiative with Suburbano Ediciones to reach the Hispanic art and literary community with ESCRIBE AQUÍ that will be conducted from March 28th through 29th. Could you please give us an insight about this process? The process began with the first “Escribe Aqui – Write Here” reading on June 27, 2014 and continued in various iterations throughout the year. Working with project partner Pedro Medina, our idea was to create this festival as a culminating event for the initiative. Deborah and Jonathan, who wanted to add this next evolution of multi-lingual programming to the hotel’s roster, really supported our wild idea and off we went to try and bridge the divide between Iberoamerican literature and contemporary English language literature.

Is there a plan to bridge the Spanish and English speaking communities with ESCRIBE AQUÍ? YES! So glad you asked this. We are providing translation services for those who do not speak Spanish. We want this to be a celebration of Iberoamerican culture and literature open to all. With that hope, we can connect the communities in a new and vibrant way. To that end, we have procured the services of a translation company in Miami that will provide Spanish to English translation throughout the festival. As part of the continued commitment to keeping the all-inclusive model, non-Spanish speakers will have devices that they can use to listen to the talks. Also, we’ll have pop-up dance performances by The Peter London Global Dance Company , and Books & Books will be selling books to the public throughout the day. Various literary magazines will be there as well. I’m happy Nagari will be representing! It’s going to be an incredible day!

What are the expectations about this event and how far do you plan to go with it? Meaning what is the long term plan for this Festival. We plan to go as far as the view from The Betsy roof deck can take you (visit thebetsyhotel.com)! Really, the plan is make Escribe Aqui an annual culminating event celebrating Iberoamerican literature and culture. Eventually, we would love to highlight all the incredible work that organizations in this space are doing throughout South Florida like in Doral, Homestead, Aventura, Coral Gables, Downtown Miami, etc. We would love for the festival to be the culminating event in a yearlong celebration of Iberoamerican literature throughout our community. The expectations are high, but then again, “as the rays of the sun are drawn together / by a curved glass and rekindled to a fire / so, to the poppies of life and death, / so does desire / draw them and bend them and bind them so, / So the noise of the wings can at last be heard / And the willow-image do grace to a bird / And the ghost on the roadway give them word / Not for forever, only a day.” –Hyam Plutzik, The Importance of Poetry, Or The Coming Forth From Eternity Into Time (from www.hyamplutzikpoetry.com)
